General Conference Countdown Day 2 of 37: Get Study Schedule here.
Today’s reading is entitled Arise and Shine Forth given by Sister Ann M. Dibb, second counselor in the Young Women’s General Presidency at the 2012 Annual Young Women’s Conference on March 24, 2012.
[**Fun Fact: Ann Dibb is the only daughter of President Thomas S. Monson & Sister Frances Monson. Ann is a faithful caregiver to her mother, and constant companion and support to both of her parents. She can often be seen accompanying Pres. Monson on official church trips, temple dedications and other social functions**]
Sister Dibb begins her talk reminding us that this year’s LDS Young Woman theme is taken from a revelation given to Joseph Smith recorded in the 115th Section of the Doctrine & Covenants.
“Verily I say unto you all: Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations.” – D&C 115:5
In her talk, Sister Dibb explains what “Arise” means to her, and offers two contrasting examples from the Bible of men who showed equal promise in their youth to become great and faithful leaders for God; Samson and Daniel. However, each ended up choosing a different path when faced with pressure from the world to abandon their standards (Samson continually “went down”, and David had the courage to “rise above”).
Two power quotes:
“The most important of all the commandments of God is that one that you are having the most difficulty keeping today.” – Pres. Harold B. Lee
“Heavenly Father does not want us to look to the world and follow its ever-changing trends. He wants us to look to Him and follow His unchanging guidance. He wants us to live the gospel and leadothers to it by setting the standard high.” – Sister Dibb
