Fear Not, I Am With Thee

One of my favorite Hymns is “How Firm A Foundation“. It is a unique hymn, because instead of the words giving praise to the Lord, the lyrics are written as the voice of the Lord speaking directly to us. This morning’s broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word opened with “How Firm A Foundation”. I felt like today’s broadcast was “just for me” because it also included another of my favorite songs of comfort – “My Song in the Night“!

Daughter A had a slow day on the Rehab unit. Weekends always feel a bit unproductive in a hospital. But, perhaps a little R&R was good. Some kind missionaries brought her the sacrament and shared a gospel message. She had a few visitors stop by to brighten her day, and later she got to FaceTime with her grandparents serving as missionaries in California (the first time for them to talk to each other “face-to-face” in 9 months! Modern technology is so cool!). She remains positive. Her warm smile and infectious giggle reflects her pure faith and trust that this trial is truly part of God’s plan in some way and that everything will be OK. She looks forward to the new week with hope for good things to happen, and that soon she will recover the use of her legs. She is such a sweet example of inner strength and courage to all of us.

This morning my own heart took courage as I felt the powerful promises from the Lord washing over and through me as I sang the hymn. I was particularly touched by the words:

Fear Not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed

For I am Thy God, and Will still give thee aid

I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand

Upheld by my Righteous, Omnipotent hand.

Wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you; and ye shall bear record of me, even Jesus Christ, that I am the Son of the living God, that I was, that I am, and that I am to come.” – (D&C 58: 5-6)
