One of my favorite quotes by one of my favorite actors, Robin Williams, goes like this:
“You know what music is? God’s little reminder that there’s something else besides us in this universe; harmonic connection between all living beings, everywhere, even the stars” – Robin Williams (August Rush, 2007)
And one of my favorite songs performed by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir celebrates that global “harmonic connection”, and makes me think of Robin Williams.
This song is listed number one on the “Songs of the Century” list compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. The American Film Institute also ranked “Over the Rainbow” the greatest movie song of all time on the list of “AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs.” It was adopted (along with Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas”) by American troops in Europe in World War II as a symbol of the United States. It’s a song about hope, and dreams and second chances. It’s a song everyone has memories attached to. If often conjures up a lot of emotion, both smiles and tears. It’s appropriate a number one movie song should be dedicated to a number one movie guy who loved to wear rainbow suspenders and make us laugh. I like to imagine Robin Williams and all of my beloved friends and family who have gone ‘over the rainbow’ flying with the bluebirds, touching the stars, and making beautiful music in the universe. 🙂 – MoSop
