Sixteen years ago on September 11 our country was brought to its knees. My children were only 10 and 7 years old.
But it seems like yesterday.
We all remember where we were. We remember the horror and sorrow.
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened,
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages,
And speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow,
Go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you’re watchin’,
And turn on “I Love Lucy” reruns?
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers,
Stand in line to give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family,
Thank God you had somebody to love?~Alan Jackson
Song lyrics from “Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning“
We also remember the STRENGTH of our country, and of our world as we came together as one great family in prayer. As we united ourselves with tremendous courage, uncommon kindness and extraordinary service.
We need that strength, courage, kindness and service more than ever today.
I believe in us.
I believe that we can “Rise Above” evil.
Because there is still goodness in this world. And as long as there is goodness and light, we have hope.

I am proud to be a part of this special musical tribute video created by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir with Tom Brokaw as narrator commemorating that tragic day, and expressing thanks for the beauty and blessings of our nation.
Be at peace today my friends, and focus on the goodness of life. – MoSop
I’ll never forget that day either. I was at work when someone’s husband called our office to see if we had heard what was happening. We all went into the break room to watch the TV and were standing there watching when the second plane flew into the tower. It was surreal. At that point, we knew it wasn’t an accident. Then, when the first tower fell, we knew it was just a matter of time until the second one did. I’ll never forget how helpless I felt. It felt like a bad dream that we could wake up from, but never did. At that time, my second son was in the Army and went on to fight in the first Gulf War. He is now retired from the Army after 20 years and is a Louisville Firefighter. I think about all those Firefighters who lost their lives trying to save others. I really think that God just chooses certain people and puts it in their hearts to serve others in that way. I could never have done it, but I know my son could. Every time I hear the siren of an EMS vehicle or a fire truck, I pray for their safety and for the safety of those they are rushing to help. It’s a special calling, and one we can all be thankful for.
That video was so moving. Thank you Holly, for honoring those who lost their lives, the innocent victims and the heroic rescuers. They all deserve to be remembered.

Thanks for sharing your experience. And thank you for raising a son who has given such a tremendous service to our country.
How blessed we are to have people willing to place themselves in harms way – and even willing to give the ultimate sacrifice – to protect and guard our lives.
