Last month’s annual Pioneer Day Concert in Salt Lake City, proved that there’s nothing happier than a performance of Broadway star Santino Fontana with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! Subtitled ‘A Celebration of Song’, it was also a celebration of life!
I’ve always loved the glittering spectacle of Broadway with its magical stories and memorable show tunes. My favorite classic musical of all time would have to be The Sound of Music, with The Fiddler on the Roof a close second (I’ve performed roles in both), but there’s certainly a long list of faves that follow; including the usual suspects; Les Miserables, Wicked, CATS, Phantom of the Opera…etc…and several possibly lesser known but equally brilliant works such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express (performed entirely on roller-blades! I saw the original staging in its opening month), Sondheim’s operatic A Little Night Music (of “Send in the Clowns” fame), The Drowsy Chaperone, Anything Goes, and of course Funny Girl.
I could go on…
…so, the opportunity to perform a variety of old & new Broadway favorites with the MoTab was a real treat for me. Beside the fulfillment of singing these beautiful songs, one of the best rewards was watching the reaction of our audience; the smiles, the laughter, the tears and the singing along while swaying back and forth waving camera-phone lights like a rock concert! 🙂 Pure joy.
And for the grand finale’ a medley of “happy” songs from Broadway (did you ever think about how many there are?) combined with a little modern surprise at the end!
THE HAPPY MEDLEY
These kind of musical experiences provide a moment in time for everyone to set worries aside, and celebrate the good things in life. – MoSop
